about

This comedic vocal and instrumental showstopper highlights the joys of playing the bassoon - combining classic orchestral bassoon excerpts with a tuneful ode to the "foghorn of the orchestra":

lyrics

In the back of the orchestra,
barely visible from the wings,
squished between the flutes and trombones,
nestled behind the strings

A truly incandescent sound is rising
Is that the voice of God so in tune?
Listen closely friends to my sweet harmony
Your ears have just been blessed by a bassoon.

Bassoon!
The graceful fog-horn of the orchestra!
The sound that can be quite a mystery
So watch as patrons turn to one another
And whisper “what’s the weird stick one I see?”

John Williams may only give us long tones
In Mozart, we repeat notes in the key
But every so often, we are given the chance
To wet our reeds and play the melody!

Stravinsky got it right with the Rite of Spring
For that’s when the bassoon begins to sing!

It can be unsettling playing higher
But still the sound can fill one with awe
Usually we play a different character
Down low we play the drunk or the grandpa

But of all the tunes that became momentous
Everyone’s fav is Dukas’s Apprentice!

Bassoon!
The stand-up comic of the orchestra!
But it’s no joke how hard it is to play
You blow until your puffed out cheeks are burning red
You spit more than is socially okay

Bassoon!
It’s magic from a bunch of sticks!
Bassoon!
It’s the baroque Mozart can’t fix!

Bassoon!
